Wreck Dive / Salem Express
The dive of the Salem Express leaves a deep imprint on anyone who knows its history, as the wreck is still a place of worship.1991. in December, the ship took aboard Mecca pilgrims on their way home from the port of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. According to official data, the ferry carried 578 passengers and 72 crew were on board. According to Eastern custom, however, the ship was of course much more crowded and, according to unofficial data, more than 1,000 passengers were on board towards Port Safaga. After midnight on December 16, barely 17 km from the final destination, Captain Moro decided to shorten the route to the home port. It was common practice to sail a few kilometers across the canal between Hyndman Reef and the relatively nearby Abu Kefan rather than approach the port of Safaga on a designated route that took a much longer time but avoided insidious coral reefs. However, on the day of the disaster, the flow in the sewer was unusually strong. Due to the reduced speed, the ship drifted unnoticed to the very shallow coral plateau end of the Hyndman Reef. Unfortunately, the ferry was still moving fast enough for its bow to hit the reef with too much force due to incorrect navigation. The force of the impact hit a leak of nearly 10 meters on the left side of the bow. However, a much bigger problem was that the rear ramp for parking vehicles opened due to the collision. Through the leak and the open ramp, many thousands of gallons of seawater spilled into the interior of the ship in minutes. As a result, the ferry tipped inexorably and, turning to its right, sank in less than 20 minutes.
