Dendara, Abydos city tour from Hurghada

Dendara - Abydos Sightseeing from Hurghada

Just as every Muslim today wants to visit Mecca at least once in his life, so did the ancient Egyptians make a pilgrimage to the cult center of the god Osiris, Abydos.

Those who did not have the opportunity to do so in their lives were often brought after their death to be buried here because the Egyptians believed the entrance to the underworld opened west of Abydos, among the mountains of the desert.

While Dendera was built long after the age of the great pharaohs was sacrificed, Hathor’s Temple of Dendera offers a fantastic old Egyptian experience.

With its massive stone roof, dark chambers, underground passages, and towering columns ending in Hathor-headed column heads, it is one of the few temples that has survived almost intact.

These tours are only available on a VIP basis, are not typically offered by travel agencies, yet we would like to show them to those interested in ancient Egyptian culture. Also, they are already past the basic Egyptian programs that visitors go through here in general.

We start our journey at dawn and in the morning we first visit Dendera, which is located next to the town of Kena (Qena) along the Nile.

Hathor was the goddess of beauty and love. Usually depicted in the form of a cow, or as a woman with a cow head, she wears a sun disk on her head between two cow horns in full human form. According to mythology, she was the nurse of Horus and later his wife.

We then make our way to Abydos. We will have lunch first, then head out and see the best-preserved church in the area, the I. Széthi Church. One of the curiosities of the Abydos church is that II. Ramses finished it, so most of the reliefs depict him.

Behind the colonnade are seven sanctuaries, these for Seth, Ptah, Re-Harakhti; Amon-Rene; It was dedicated to Osiris, Isis, and Horus.

In one of the corridors of the inner hypostal hall is an inscription called the “King’s List,” which begins with Stallion, who traditionally considers the founder of Egypt and lists another 34 pharaohs in roughly chronological order up to Seth, leaving out the undesirable rulers.

Behind the church rises the Ozireion, which was built of large granite blocks, while the church of Széthi I is made of limestone and sandstone. The Ozireion lies much deeper (15m) than the other temple and often stands in water. It was also considered an ancient empire, but the current prevailing view is that it dates from the time of Merneptah (1213-1203 BC). Since the temple of Seth I was built to commemorate the former pharaohs, it is possible that Osireion served as a symbolic burial chapel. It once housed a tomb with a jaw sarcophagus surrounded by a pool full of water.

Mysterious signs and symbols: flower of life, helicopter, submarine, flying, what does the past hide? Did they really exist, were these signs really carved into the wall of the Abydos temple? See for yourself and decide!
